Elon Musk and Grimes, real name Claire Boucher, have been together for two years after first announcing their relationship with a public appearance at the 2018 Met Gala. Mr Musk had six children with his first wife, Justine, who he was married to from 2000 to 2008. Their first son, Nevada Alexander Musk, died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at just 10-weeks-old.

Mr Musk and Grimes shocked the world with their bizarre choice of name for their young son.

The couple originally decided to name the baby, born on May 4, X Æ A-12.

However, the pair have since had to change it in accordance with California state law.

Californian law bans the use of Indo-Arabic numerals in names, so to get around this rule, the couple swapped the 12 for the same number in roman numerals, rendering the new name X Æ A-Xii.

Grimes revealed she had changed the baby's name after a fan quizzed the singer about it on Instagram.

They wrote: "Did you change the baby name because of California laws? What is the baby's new name?"

Replying to the comment, Grimes posted: "X Æ A-Xii." Another fan added: "Nice! Just removed the numbers to conform to California state law."

Grimes added: "Roman numbers. Looks better tbh." The new mother also said that only "one dash is allowed" in a name under California law.

How do you pronounce the name?

X Æ A-Xii is not a regular name, but rather a series of letters and numbers that carry sentimental meaning to the tech CEO and his partner.

Fans were intrigued as to how to pronounce the child's name, and the couple had different interpretations.

Grimes said: "It's just X, like the letter X. Then AI. Like how you said the letter A then I."

Mr Musk, however, told podcast host Joe Rogan: "I mean it's just X, the letter X. And then the AE is, like, pronounced 'Ash'… and then, A-12, A-12 is my contribution."

The new mother took to Twitter to explain her decision behind the name, and said that the 'X' represents an unknown variable often seen in mathematics.

Æ refers to the elven spelling of AI, which is short for Artificial Intelligence and also means love in Japanese.

Lastly, A-Xii is in reference to the duo's favourite aircraft - a Lockheed, and a precursor to an SR-17, also known as a Blackbird.

Grimes posted on Twitter: "No weapons, no defences, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent."

The Canadian songstress also said that the A in the name refers to her favourite song, Archangel.
