This recipe instantly earned 5 stars when my sister apologized to my mother, turned to me, and said, "this is the best beefiness stew i have ever had!" Of course, i made some considerable changes to conform my taste. I decided that beef stew needs wine, so in the 45 minute time menses i added half a cup of marsala, and for the last 15 minutes (afterward the peas are added) i threw in well-nigh 1/4 cup of sherry. I used almost ii pounds of beef, and then i added more beefiness goop (about a cup more) and 2 tablespoons of actress tomato paste. The seasonings were besides changed: no bay leaf, ane/four teaspoon of dried rosemary in identify of fresh, 1/two tsp of adobo, the aforementioned amount of ruddy pepper flakes, and most a tsp of paprika. I left out the thyme. The secret ingredient to kick up whatsoever dish was added: Goya Sazon seasoning. I also used canned mushrooms instead of fresh. Earlier cooking the meat in the oil, i cooked 2 chopped garlic cloves with extra garlic powder in it, then added the beef. I served it over egg noodles, but cooked it about 20 minutes longer- peradventure more than. Information technology really came out delicious, just, equally yous see, i made a lot of changes, so i will only give it iv stars (without them it wouldve been too bland). Will definitely make again!

This is definitly a Rosemary lover's repast ! I used two extra cans of beefiness broth and nevertheless all I could gustation was the rosemary! I was hoping for a nice beef flavor (considering this is one of the only recipies here for beef stew that calls for beef broth), but it tasted like tomato sauce with tons of rosemary. I call back next time , I will omit the love apple paste and use a little cornstarch to thicken it. As well, I volition only use a i/4 of the rosemary. Simply if you like rosemary, this is definitly the recipe for you !
07/17/2001
Overall information technology was very tasty. Good dish for a common cold foggy evening. Did not use the crushed cerise pepper flakes. And next time, nosotros would reduce the rosemay. Advise maybe using one/2 rosemary sprig. The stew does get dry when reheating for leftovers. I would utilise this recipe once more.
12/22/2002
Everyone said this was good, even my picky son and his friend. I also added some tater flakes to thicken information technology up a little and used a few pinches of stale Rosemary in place of the fresh. I as well added salt. Next time will cut dorsum on the rosemary and thyme. Cheers Marianne for a dandy recipe and cheers to all the helpful reviews.

With whatsoever meat recipe I endeavor, whether from a volume or elsewhere, I always season [the meat] to sense of taste and then follow directions accordingly, so I added a few more seasonings than chosen for (ex. garlic, sazon, adobe). I also added a tablespoon of carbohydrate afterwards adding the broth as this "kills" the bitterness of the tomatoes. All vegetables I used, including potatoes, were canned. Dish came out perfect and my children liked information technology equally well... which is always a plus. :-)
04/10/2001
Hearty soup...expert for a cold day. Although, I didn't particularly like the tomato basted sauce and idea the rosemary sprig was as well overpowering for the soup. Would propose a fiddling less rosemary.
03/eighteen/2003
This was a delicious repast, and becouse it had potatoes in information technology, it was a consummate repast. This is great on a rainy day,to warm yous up.
03/30/2001
It was a very easy recipe for someone in a bustle. I added a 1/2 cup of barley to information technology to make it a bit thicker. Overall what a wonderful and tastful recipe
10/29/2001
One of the best stew recipes I've tried yet - I added white cooking wine, actress reddish pepper and extra vegetables and we loved it!
12/13/2000
The first dark at that place was not much flavor, just information technology was sooo expert for leftovers. Let information technology sit down overnight or so. I added a quarter cup of white wine to it. I served information technology over wide egg noodles and then another fourth dimension I served information technology over staff of life. Yum!
12/28/2010
Made exactly per the recipe, no substitutions were necessary. Don't tell my mother-in-law just my hubby likes this recipe meliorate than hers!!
10/23/2010
I agree with many of the other reviewers that this is a good base recipe that can be made succulent with a few actress ingredients. I added three minced garlic cloves when I sauteed the onions, and 3/4 cup of a dry cerise vino when I added the potatoes. Also, the potatoes took longer to cook than the recipe indicates, so I would recommend calculation them twenty minutes earlier.
12/eleven/2010
I did take to add another cup of goop forth with the carrots, and information technology still concluded up thick. No other changes to the recipe, and we enjoyed information technology.
11/17/2008
This dish was easy and tasty but as well much rosemary--it was a little overpowering. We like our stew a little more than spicy so next time I will probably add parsley instead of rosemary and some peppers.
01/11/2003
This is a bones, yet tasty recipe. I doubled the recipe and after adding near of the ingredients did not have even close to plenty broth. I added one additional 14 ounce can of beef broth and that did the trick. The recipe recommends adding water if the stew is besides thick but that would likely dilute the taste even further. I'm glad I used the broth. There may be a few reasons why I didn't have enough liquid: 1) I drained all of the fatty after browning the meat and before setting information technology aside. That may have reduced the liquid, or, ii) I used very large potatoes and a slightly more carrot pieces than the recipe chosen for. Also, I didn't accept fresh mushrooms available, so I used bottled mushrooms, by the same weight the recipe chosen for. All of that probably made the stew thicker, reducing the available liquid, and 3) I may have been looking for more of a soup than a stew. Withal, even with the extra tin of broth, my upshot was all the same something closer to a stew than a soup. Next time, I may increase the red pepper flakes for merely a little more of a kick. I lightly toasted some whole wheat bread. The stew and bread made an exceptional wintertime weekend lunch!
xi/06/2007
My family said that this was the all-time thing that I had ever fabricated. ;) I used a potroast leftovers and subsitituted chicken goop for beefiness goop.
09/12/2011
Loved this, but I did add 1 more tin can of broth, some ruby wine, croaky black pepper, and 1 more than spud. Very yummy and I volition brand it over again!! Thank you!!
12/11/2010
A pretty good beef stew. We made information technology just every bit the recipe says, but the rosemary flavor over powered everything and but didn't get well. We left it in for just a minute the next time and information technology was perfect.
05/15/2007
This was good, simply non great. It was a petty too tomato-y. I added a modest amount of liquid smoke, and some red wine.
01/08/2007
I made this is the crockpot and information technology turned out beautifully. I thought a whole sprig of rosemary, notwithstanding, was a fiddling overpowering.
03/20/2009
This soup is very easy to make and very skilful. It's an like shooting fish in a barrel recipe to change and brand your own. I highly recomend it.
12/twenty/2011
Only finished making and eating this. I didn't take whatsoever rosemary so I used oregano. It was very very good. We loved it. Volition make this again shortly.
xi/14/2008
This will exist my default beefiness stew from at present on!
02/23/2001
Very good stew. This is a very thick stew, rib stickin' & that's a "good thing". :-) I served information technology with bootleg biscuits and information technology was an overall hit!
03/07/2005
Easy and delicious! This one'southward a keeper =D
12/03/2010
It was a hit - even with the person who claimed they didn't similar "stew". I left all the seasonsings out except salt and pepper and did not include the mushrooms or peas; although I did add parsnips and nearly twice equally much beef stock. My suggestion would exist to saute the onions before calculation the love apple paste.
01/31/2010
I love this recipe. It'due south very flavourful! Only one matter I added was a half cup of blood-red wine. I'k certain I will go far many times during this wintertime!
10/thirty/2009
This is very adept. It's not a "traditional" beef stew, but very tomatoey and herby. I've fabricated information technology twice in the final few weeks and the 2nd fourth dimension I added more than beef stock and a little reddish wine. Expert stuff - thanks for the recipe!
02/17/2011
I've been wanting to cook with rosemary for a while, but I felt this wasn't the correct recipe for it. If I were to prepare this recipe again, I would make some rice to put under the stew because the stew wasn't as thick as I wanted it to be. It'south not probable that I'yard going to make this once more but considering it wasn't the right flavor combination I wanted.
11/09/2010
I kept this simple, simply it gave me a good base to go off of. I didn't utilise any of the spices or the mushrooms since I didn't have them but I did add together celery. I probably added 4 more cups of beef broth to this and it was perfect. Cooking the meat that long fabricated our tougher beef round perfect. I added Worchestershire sauce just a shake or two would take been just correct. I over did it and information technology was a niggling too potent. I rarely take recipes on her turn out fabulously whether I follow them or practice my own affair so this was a dandy one for us.
10/24/2007
I recall that this recipe was great although like many other people I did change it up a trivial I added about a ane/2 can of beer and I also didnt add together the rosemary although I did add nearly a Tablespoon of ground tyme in there and besides I left out the peas considering I dont like them but I did add two stalks of celery! this recipe turned out great thanks so much
11/13/2002
First-class! Needed to be cooked higher up simmer for a bit longer to fully melt the potatoes, but it tasted great! Like others, might recommend i/ii sprig of rosemary and slightly more crimson pepper flakes. Yum!
04/29/2001
Too tomatoey!
03/06/2001
Very Easy and Very Tasty ! I added a little more chrushed red pepper. Turned out first-class. My boyfriend, a talented cook, idea it was the best stew he'd e'er tasted.
02/12/2012
Bland
03/17/2013
I tried this recipe. I added a can of chopped tomatoes and I added thirty minutes. I likewise added celery. Information technology was tasty with a petty kicking.
11/xi/2008
I thought this was pretty good. I did non the rosemary and just 1/two the time. I likewise added a scrap more water because it was too too thick....... and iii bullion cubes for some added flavor. I thought this was an excellent base recipe perfect for adjustments!
03/07/2002
Maybe 1/ii of a sprig of Rosemary, other than that, information technology'due south great.
01/22/2006
This was a great stew recipe. I used a piddling more red pepper flakes to spice information technology upwards a bit more and used green beans instead of peas, wonderfull flavor!
07/19/2001
This is the best stew that I've e'er tried. My swain said it was awesome. I will utilise this recipe from now on.
01/06/2015
This is a practiced recipe, although I forgot the peas! I served it over rice with cornbread. Family liked it, merely, I felt the broth should accept been a chip thicker. Will use cornstarch next time.
04/17/2002
This recipe was very bland. I volition not make information technology once again. It took a long time to make and I don't think it was worth information technology.
03/12/2004
I really liked this stew. I made it very thick and information technology had a succulent flavor. I am vegetarian so I ommitted the meat and used a vegetarian beefiness broth. It was so succulent I am presently making an additional batch for some friends!
08/04/2010
awesome and very tasty recipe!
11/06/2014
Made it exactly per the recipe, idea it was wondeful. Great flavors and glad I accept leftovers.
03/26/2013
LOVE the pepper flakes... Would have never thought of it otherwise, gave information technology a cracking kick. Fabricated it exactly every bit directed minus the rosemary (I thought I had some but didn't). Will use this as my get-to stew recipe afterwards about a dozen different experiments. Served over egg noodles, that was some expert dinner.
03/10/2014
I've made this twice and both times my picky father said it was the best stew he's ever had. That's something coming from a 96 year sometime that thinks no ane can cook anything better than his mother. The only changes I made was to use a handful of little red potatoes instead of regular potatoes and fresh greenish beans instead of peas. I put the light-green beans in at the same time as the potatoes which I cutting in half. The herbs and seasonings were just fine. Just watch how big a sprig of rosemary you use, and if the bay leaves are small, throw in an actress.
09/03/2003
Fantabulous recipe, great variation on a traditional stew! Very pleased and wil utilize againa nd over again
08/21/2014
Was a very easy and very good recipe. My hubby non a love apple fan and he had no trouble with the tomato base of operations. Did not add the beat out red pepper, but will add together information technology next fourth dimension for more flavour.
02/01/2013
Tasty. Had to use much more broth though. Will make once again and once more. Dainty rosemary flavor.
11/11/2014
does not work over the pasta every bit sugested pasta n taters too much starch together
03/16/2004
Nice bones recipe.
08/12/2012
I made this for my fiance and he loved information technology! I don't consume meat, and so I made information technology without tasting it, only he raved about information technology. I followed the recipe as written except I left out the mushrooms, I used stale rosemary instead of fresh, and used a pinch of cayenne pepper instead of the scarlet pepper flakes. I added about ane/4 cup of red vino, a couple shakes of garlic powder, and some black pepper, and it seemed a petty thin later I added the potatoes and carrots, and so I added i tbsp of iv to thicken it. I'll definitely make it over again.
02/28/2005
This wasn't what any of us really expected. Hubby and I both think it was the lycopersicon esculentum paste. The red color threw us off and we're lycopersicon esculentum eaters. Nosotros may just have not wanted stew that night.
05/26/2013
Came out too bland. Will have to retry with more/different spices.
01/08/2015
Awesomely practiced! The tomato paste gives the stew a tasty and thick gravy. A real treat for STEW!!!
04/09/2012
I did not have rosemary & threw in some chopped celery + extra cup of beef goop. I wanted to spice up the tomato taste a chip more and so I added a splash of Worcestershire sauce and the stop outcome was SPECTACULAR Keen at all and unique.!
02/11/2013
This recipe was great. I used information technology to make clean out the pantry. I used a random can of beef chunks instead of fresh meat and a can of green beans instead of mushrooms. I also used dried herbs. I was worried that this would just sense of taste like veggies in tomato sauce, but with proper seasoning information technology turned out succulent.
01/04/2002
Very very good.. thank yous
12/07/2004
I'm giving this 4 stars because as the recipe is, I idea the stew was really bland (absolutely, I used dried herbs which probably made a departure). I added iii beefiness burgoo cubes to make it beefier tasting, and also a splash of Worcestershire Sauce. I didn't want to dilute the flavor by adding water so I used a can of diced tomatoes. This made information technology much better. Definitely brand this a day alee of eating. Thanks!
12/08/2012
It was OK, but it didn't taste like a traditional stew. The taste of the tomato paste didn't seem right and was also strong. Likewise, the potatoes and carrots should become extra time to cook.
xi/nineteen/2014
Too much rosemary! I would effort it over again, just I would probably have the rosemary out altogether.
03/30/2003
Not bad simply pretty bland - it tastes similar something'due south missing from the recipe. We added some cerise wine to the leftovers which helped just it needs more than assist! I'll be looking for another low fat beefiness stew recipe.
04/22/2013
This was adept. I added canned corn and celery. I also added fresh garlic. I bough Bread bowls and served it in that. Thank you for the recipe i will make information technology again!
09/xix/2014
Unfortunately I did not take Rosemary or thyme, and my boyfriend doesn't like mushrooms or tomato paste, so I was forced to tweak the recipe. I kept all other ingredients the same, and seasoned the beefiness outset and information technology came out bang-up! I started with a roux to replace the tomato paste, and added some chopped tomato to go along the season in. I also added the potato and carrots in earlier to requite them more time to melt. This is great as a thinner broth for a more soup like feel, or a thicker goop to put over rice. Would make again~
06/13/2013
I grew up Hating stew. My mother was a great cook, only this was something I could not like. I Made this stew a few weeks ago. Information technology was so good. Even so I accidently picked upwards fresh tyme instead of the rosemary and added dried tyme as well. It was a very "tymey" dish, but still good. I am getting ready to make it once again and volition apply the rosemary this fourth dimension.
12/02/2014
Best beef stew ever. Seriously. However...I use red potatoes, twice the beef broth, fresh mushrooms, calculation 3 cloves of garlic and I don't apply rosemary, and its perfection. It never lasts more than than one 60 minutes in the house.
02/07/2015
Turned out actually well. I used a Dutch oven. Later I browned the meat and softened the onions I put it into a 285 degree oven. I followed the times given and added ingredients as called for. I did add two stalks of celery sliced, with the onions. Yummy!
03/01/2020
Very proficient and comforting. Added a can of diced tomatoes to this recipe. Family loved it.
03/03/2020
I needed to add quite a bit of h2o to this. I also added red wine which was a nice addition.
09/ten/2016
I made this for my female parent and stepfather after his surgery....they said it was the all-time beef stew they had ever eaten.....volition brand again for certain.
04/01/2016
I made this dish for the first time and it came amazing
09/09/2016
I made this but added some barley, information technology was succulent
12/09/2018
This stew is delicious. I prefer stew without any lycopersicon esculentum, so I left information technology out. I also like it with dumplings made with Bisquick. It'south merely Bisquick and milk ( recipe on box ). I drop dumplings correct onto the stew so they can soak in the flavors of the stew. The dumplings thicken up the stew a lot, so you won't need any thickener other than dumplings. You lot could likewise put some of the stew goop into a pot and cook them separately on the stove pinnacle. They cook faster in a pot than slow cooker. Enjoy your dinner! Roseann
11/05/2014
This was mode too banal for me, and so I turned information technology into vegetable beefiness soup by adding a can of cheap Hunts spaghetti sauce, a can of dark-green beans, some celery seed. Made a large put of really tasty soup - so I'll freeze some for later.
11/03/2020
Always purchase chuck (shoulder). And, normally a chuck roast is better toll. At least 2.5 hours on simmer.
09/29/2018
It was bland for me and so I had to adjust the soup base
xi/03/2014
I beloved the basic recipe. I adopt cubed sirloin steak for my beef and fresh green beans in place of peas.
10/06/2012
Yes, but I would leave out the thyme the next fourth dimension .
03/04/2020
I made this receipe pretty much similar it was suggested, however, I added minced garlic to the meat when browning, and I substituted cut green beans for the peas....and, oh aye, I added a few thin slices of jalapeno peppers to the mix for a picayune heat. It'due south hard to believe that I could brand such a delicious dish. Probably volition take some fourth dimension to outdo myself. Hmmmmm...... what 'southward adjacent?
03/04/2020
A very pocket-size one simply a compression of rosemary . Smashing recipe fabricated a double batch.
05/23/2018
The blood-red pepper flakes ruined the dish. Otherwise It would have been okay. Beefiness stew just shouldn't exist spicy in my opinion.
01/26/2015
So adept. Didn't utilise red pepper or rosemary and was nevertheless very flavorful. Added to my remake recipes
02/26/2020
This was amazing! I don't cook beef stew very well, even with family recipes, in a crock pot, etc. (I'thou 63 years former). I used a newly purchased induction burner since that came with a big stew pot. I had to practise lots of research online to determine the correct temperatures to carry out the various steps in the recipe. I was surprised at how low the temps needed to be to do the task! The only change I fabricated was omitting the rosemary sprig since I really don't similar rosemary. Information technology took some time and effort but was worth it! Will brand again now that I have figured out the right settings on my consecration burner. Give thanks you and so much for the recipe!
11/02/2014
My family loved this stew. Wonderful..... Make information technology you lot won't be sorry.
03/thirty/2020
came out very good , enjoyed the basic beefiness stew
12/14/2018
Substitutes: chicken goop, fresh tomatoes, Added: 5 cloves garlic, i/3 cup worchester, Greek Seasoning, more rosemary, paprika, more than bay leaves, 1 1/2 oz red vino.
03/02/2020
Skilful and hearty! I think it's all-time to make good size chunks of the ingredients (don't cut small) if that makes sense. Made just as the recipe calls!
04/22/2020
This stew came out great! Information technology was piece of cake to make and tastes peachy! I didn't have rosemary, but it was even so good. Thank you for the recipe
eleven/21/2020
Succulent. Peachy recipe. Didn't alter a thing.
02/25/2020
I tried the dissimilar recipe created by "2Yung2Cook" and then the this recipe. The Original was MUCH improve!
eleven/09/2014
Very easy comfort food. My family loved it. It inspired me to start back cooking instead of dining out.
11/21/2016
This is a dynamite recipe for stew. The best I've ever fabricated
11/23/2014
The vegetables in this recipe were bang-up. However, I establish this recipe to be just too banal. It needed something like wine or I don't know what, only information technology was just to Bland for my family'south gustation.
02/27/2020
Easy on the oil, floured the beef before browning and used a whole carton of beef broth. First-class
x/26/2015
I teach cooking to people with disabilities and this was a good, simple, but fourth dimension consuming dish for them to brand. They all loved it however I did stride down the rosemary by half. And prepared this for service of 60.
07/02/2015
i modified it for the instapot pressure cooker 'stew' setting. came out amazingly well!
02/25/2020
Very squeamish flavor!! Easy and enjoyable to make. I added a little more beefiness and broth. Nosotros really loved this!!
01/08/2013
Groovy recipe, yet it took an extra hour to fully melt.
